Anyone who is serious about looking after their body needs to ensure they consume the right kind of nutrition to replace what exercise takes out of the body. But with so many products available, how do you know what works and what doesn’t work? And how do you know that you aren’t overlapping when you take more than one product? Reading labels and understanding what goes into each product as well as how it affects your body is a good place to start. To take it a little further for you, we have come up with three essential supplements that you should be giving back to your body when you are in training. 1. Whey Protein Powder Despite controversies around additives and hormones in cows’ milk, it remains a very good source of essential amino acids which the body needs for building. It is also digested quickly and easily by the body, and is the most nutritious form of protein available. It is also the purest- at 90 percent protein and has hardly any fat or cholesterol. Typically whey protein concentrate only contains 29 to 89 percent protein. Generally the less protein there is, the more fat, lactose and cholesterol. Whey protein assists with the repair of muscles, bones and body cells. It also has anti-inflammatory properties and provides assistance with weight loss. 2. Glutamine Taking a glutamine supplement is very important for endurance athletes because exercise can deplete the blood glutamine level to the point that it affects your immunity and makes you more susceptible to colds, flus and infections. It is also important for body building because it delivers the essential fuel required for the brain, intestinal lining, white blood cells and muscles. Glutamine encourages a positive nitrogen balance in the muscle tissues and delivers anti-catabolic effects, which can repair damage done to cells during exercise. Glutamine depletion is common in people who over-train and might be accompanied by a drop in performance and mood swings. 3. MSM An organic sulfur compound, MSM is the third largest nutrient in the body and a valuable source of sulfur. The body needs sulfur for detoxification and to break down accumulated toxins. MSM is ideal for protecting the bones and joints against arthritis and osteoarthritis as it breaks up calcium deposits in the joints. It also aids flexibility and can relieve stiffness and swelling.
